  thoughourtraditionshaveevolved,thespiritofgraceandhumilityattheheartofthanksgivinghaspersistedthrougheverychapterofourstory.whenpresidentgeorgewashingtonproclaimedourcountry’sfirstthanksgiving,hepraisedagenerousandknowinggodforshepherdingouryoungrepublicthroughitsuncertainbeginnings.decadeslater,presidentabrahamlincolnlookedtothedivinetoprotectthosewhohadknowntheworstofcivilwar,andtorestorethenation"tothefullenjoymentofpeace,harmony,tranquility,andunion."

  aswegatherinourcommunitiesandinourhomes,aroundthetableornearthehearth,wegivethankstoeachotherandtogodforthemanykindnessesandcomfortsthatgraceourlives.letuspausetorecountthesimplegiftsthatsustainus,andresolvetopaythemforwardintheyeartocome.

  inwitnesswhereof,ihavehereuntosetmyhandthissixteenthdayofnovember,intheyearofourlordtwothousandeleven,andoftheindependenceoftheunitedstatesofamericathetwohundredandthirty-sixth.

  onbehalfoftheobamafamily–michelle,malia,sasha,boandme–iwanttowisheveryoneaveryhappythanksgiving.

  forus,likesomanyofyou,thisisadayfulloffamilyandfriends;foodandfootball.it’sadaytofighttheoverwhelmingurgetotakeanap–atleastuntilafterdinner.butmostofall,it’satimetogivethanksforeachother,andfortheincrediblebountyweenjoy.

  that’sespeciallyimportantthisyear.asanation,we’vejustemergedfromacampaignseasonthatwaspassionate,noisy,andvitaltoourdemocracy.butitalsorequiredustomakechoices–andsometimesthosechoicesledustofocusonwhatsetsusapartinsteadofwhattiesustogether;onwhatcandidatewesupportinsteadofwhatcountrywebelongto.

  thanksgivingisachancetoputitallinperspective–torememberthat,despiteourdifferences,weare,andalwayswillbe,americansfirstandforemost.

  todaywegivethanksforblessingsthatarealltoorareinthisworld.theabilitytospendtimewiththeoneswelove;tosaywhatwewant;toworshipasweplease;toknowthattherearebravemenandwomendefendingourfreedomaroundtheglobe;andtolookourchildrenintheeyeandtellthemthat,hereinamerica,nodreamistoobigifthey’rewillingtoworkforit.

  we’realsogratefulthatthiscountryhasalwaysbeenhometoamericanswhoseetheseblessingsnotsimplyasgiftstoenjoy,butasopportunitiestogiveback.americanswhobelievewehavearesponsibilitytolookoutforthoselessfortunate–topulleachotherupandmoveforwardtogether.

  rightnow,aswepreparetogatheraroundourdinnertables,therearefamiliesinthenortheastwhodon’thavethatluxury.manyofthemhavelosteverythingtohurricanesandy–homes,possessions,evenlovedones.anditwillbealongtimebeforelifegoesbacktonormal.

  butinthemidstofsomuchtragedy,therearealsoglimmersofhope.overthelastfewweeks,we’veseenfemapersonnel,nationalguardandfirstrespondersworkingaroundtheclockinhard-hitcommunities.we’veseenhospitalworkersusingtheirlunchbreakstodistributesupplies.familiesofferingupextrabedrooms.thefiredepartmentadvertisingfreehotshowers.busesfullofvolunteerscomingfromhundredsofmilesaway.neighborssharingwhatevertheyhave–food,water,electricity–andsayingagainandagainhowluckytheyaretohavearoofovertheirheads.

  itwouldhavebeeneasyforthesefolkstodonothing–toworryaboutthemselvesandleavetheresttosomeoneelse.butthat’snotwhoweare.that’snotwhatwedo.

  that’ssomethingtobegratefulfor–todayandeveryday.

  sotoalltheamericansdoingyourparttomakeourworldabetterplace–itismyprivilegetoserveasyourpresident.toallourservicemembers–itismyhonortobeyourcommanderinchief.andfromourfamilytoyours,happythanksgiving.

  we’llbespendingtodayjustlikemanyofyou–sittingdownwithfamilyandfriendstoeatsomegoodfood,tellsomestories,watchalittlefootball,andmostimportantly,countourblessings.

  andasamericans,wehavesomuchtobethankfulfor.

  wegivethanksforthemenandwomenwhosetsailforthislandnearlyfourcenturiesago,riskingeverythingforthechanceatabetterlife–andthepeoplewhowerealreadyhere,ournativeamericanbrothersandsisters,fortheirgenerosityduringthatfirstthanksgiving.

  wegivethanksforthegenerationswhofollowed–peopleofallracesandreligions,whoarrivedherefromeverycountryonearthandworkedtobuildsomethingbetterforthemselvesandforus.

  wegivethanksforallourmenandwomeninuniform–andfortheirfamilies,whoaresurelymissingthemverymuchtoday.we’regratefulfortheirsacrificetoo.

  weareapeoplewhoaregreatertogetherthanweareonourown.that’swhattodayisabout.that’swhateverydayshouldbeabout.nomatterourdifferences,we’reallpartofoneamericanfamily.weareeachother’skeeper.weareonenation,undergod.thatcoretenetofouramericanexperiencehasguidedusfromtheearliestdaysofourfounding–anditwillguideustoafuturethat’sevenbrighterthantoday.

  thankyou,godblessyou,andfrommyfamilytoyours,happythanksgiving.
